Walter Paul David Sumann, 73, of Shobonier, died at 5:37 a.m. on
Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday at Augsburg Immanuel
Lutheran Church in rural Shobonier, with the Revs. Bruce Milash and
Douglas Meyer officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery, with
military rites accorded by Crawford-Hale American Legion Post No. 95 of
Vandalia. Visitation will be held from 5-8 p.m. on Wednesday at Pagel
Funeral Home in St. Peter and one hour before services on Thursday at
the church. Memorials: Immanuel Lutheran Church Building Fund,
American Cancer Society or donor’s choice.
Mr. Summann was born on May 9, 1936, in Fayette County, the son of
Walter W. and Olga A. Wodtke Summann. He married Ruth Magnus on
Oct. 22, 1960, at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in St. Peter.
He was a farmer and a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, where he
served in several positions throughout the years. He served in the Army.
He is survived by his wife; son, Daniel Summann and his wife Margaret of
Shobonier; daughter, Sandy and her husband Steve Vespa of Springfield;
sisters, Emily and her husband Donald Ehrat of Shobonier, and Iris and her
husband Charles Kruenegel of Shobonier; and grandchildren, Spencer and
Ryan Summann, and Zachary, Nicholas and Patrick Vespa.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a grandchild, Jaden Daniel
Summann.
