Our SUMMANN Ancestors
We have a very special family history in that very few can take their surname back to it's
origin. We are able to do this with our Summann name because of the unusual name
practices in the area of Germany where the Summann came from.

First, lets start with Andreas Hartlage married Anna Catharin Schainer, they had a daughter,
Ann Marg Ilsaben Hartlage. Ann Marg married Johann Friedrich Wilhelm Winkelmann. They
had a son, Christoph Heinrich Winkelmann, our first starting point.

Second, there was Johann Friedrich Spreen married Anna Margret Ilsaben Rolfingen, they
had a daughter, Anne Margret Ilsaben Charlotte Spreen. She married Johan Cord
Friedrich Wm. Schlotmann and they had a daughter, Anne Margarethe Ilsaben Schlotmann,
our second starting point. Ann Margret married Christoph J. H. Summann.

Now for the rest of the story.

A landowner handed down his land to his oldest son. When he had no son then the land
went to the oldest daughter.  When she married, if he wasn't a landowner, her husband took
the wife's last name for his own and thereby taking possession of the land. The children
would go by the wife's name also.  So in that case the blood line is still there but just using
the wife's name instead of the husband's name. In our case it is just a little bit different.
There was a Christoph J. H. Summann who owned the land #14 in Preussiches
Stroehen, Province of Westfalen, Germany. He was not a blood relative to us. He married
Anna Margarethe Ilsabein SCHLOTTMANN on November 6, 1793. Christoph soon
died, leaving the land to his wife.  She then remarried Christoph Heinrich Winkelmann.
He was not a landowner, so he took his wife's name which was now Summann.  Because
of this arrangement, this is as far back as our Summann  line goes as any further back
would not be relatives.

Christoph Heinrich (WINKELMANN) SUMMANN is our oldest known ancestor in the
Summann family. Christoph was from farm  #15 in Hanover Stroehen, Germany.  He was
born a Winkelmann not a Summann.  He took his wife's name to keep her land.
Christoph was married to Anne Margarethe Ilsabein (SCHLOTTMANN) SUMMANN on
April 15, 1801.  Anne was born on January 6, 1771.  This was her second marriage.  She
was previously married to Christoph J. H. Summann with whom she had no children.
Christoph and Anne were the parents of at least five children -
Christine Wilhelmine Sophie
* Heinrich Conrad,
* Henriette Sophie,
* Margrethe Elisabeth,
* Marie Christine Elisabeth.
They were farmers and lived in Preussiches Stroehen, Germany on Anne's land #14 that
she had from her first husband.
Christoph died on October 29, 1848 and was buried on November 1, 1848 in Preussiches
Stroehen, Germany.  He was 67 years 10 months 25 days old when he died.
Anne died on April 24, 1853 and was buried April 27, 1853 in Preussiches Stroehen,
Germany. She was 82 years 3 months 18 days old when she died. She died of weakness
of old age.
